But Ming-Na Wen was freaking Mulan!

No, I understand their point but I am happy that two of the females are actually of Asian heritage. Wen's parents are Cantonese and Chloe Bennet's father is Chinese...so no, it's not OMG CAUCASIAN GIRLS ALL OVER THE PLACE! You know...like Girls...

Sometimes, Tumblr is a little too sensitive especially when combined with not fact-checking.

Also, J. August Richards as Luke Cage, yes please? Or have we found out his character name when I wasn't looking?

It looked like Luke Cage in that one shot but not enough to recognize the actor.

Don't ask me to explain Tumblr people.

That would be sweet, but I'm not positive. Wiki still has him listed as playing an "unspecified role".

This is what I'm really excited about: "In January 2013, Cobie Smulders, who played agent Maria Hill in The Avengers, said that her character may make an appearance in the show and that her commitment to How I Met Your Mother would not prevent her from participating."

Uhoh, wait, Cobie's white, isn't she? Well that's no good...
...you had me at "J August Richards"...

This series is looking better and better by the moment!
I'm not on tumblr but my kidlet is, and she informed me just today that people there like to be indignant about SOMETHING, and when there isn't anything to be indignant about, they make it up ...
Yeah, that's pretty much it. Tumblr's either in a constant level of SQUEE over something... or in an equally constant level of OUTRAGEOUS OUTRAGE about the exact same thing. You wouldn't think that could be possible, but it is.
Tumblr: If In Doubt, Blame the Women.

After all, female characters might get in the way of shipping all the white guys.
Well the issue wasn't that they were women, it was that they were *white*. Even though two of them are Asian? I don't even know.
Yeah, I saw those comments and while I see their point in way (we do need more non-white actors cast in shows), calling two Asian actresses white because a promo pic with frankly rather poor lighting made them look pale is icky to me. You don't get to police someone's racial identity.

I noticed that some of the objections specifically said that there were too many white women, rather than white men, and that makes me side-eye .

It just occurred to me. Coulson is the fandom pet, right? If he gets a canon love interest in the show or the comics, fandom is going to lose its shit.

Well, you know, they're non-white... they're just not non-white ENOUGH.

The only critique I saw about the guys was that "they're wearing skinny jeans". Because, as everyone knows, an early-on promo cast picture ALWAYS accurately reflects everything about a television show. Duh.

Yeah, my first thought was that if they strike up something with Ming-Na's character, that'll give these same people carte blanche to go medieval on a female POC.

I guess I'm surprised at the Outrageous Feminist/Diversity Police Outrage because this is a Joss project, and I thought he'd stored up some good fandom karma over the years.

God, you're right. I'd be totally on board with Coulson and Ming-Na's character being together, by the way. She seems awesome. I find Coulson rather boring, but if he's paired with a badass lady I might give him a chance. ;)

There's been a lot of backlash against Joss recently, probably because he's so popular. Some of the criticism is valid, his work is far from perfect (although much better than other people's), but a lot of 'criticism' makes my inner postgrad student cringe. Some people really need to read up on feminism and media studies before they attempt a feminist critique.

...wow, I sound like such a snob. It's just that a lot of supposed feminism on tumblr makes me want to yell "feminism, you're doing it wrong!"

I think I love Coulson because he IS so totally white bread, and yet secretly, quietly awesome at the same time. I mean, I liked him in the earlier movies, but I fell in love after "A Funny Thing Happened..."

(Of course we're assuming that this is somehow actually Coulson, and not a LMD or something. On the other hand, this is (essentially) scifi, so I'm not sure it'd matter to most people ;))

What you mean piling hate on every random guy/men in general is not feminism?
Most of the Tumblr Feminists I've seen tend to direct their hate towards other women rather than men. I never venture outside fandom circles on tumblr, and from what I've seen it's fans hating and erasing female characters as they always have, except now they're using 'feminism' to try to justify their hate. I almost wish they would come out and say "I hate Character X because she interferes with my ship," at least that's more honest.
Yeah most of the stuff I've seen has been more along the line of "Misogyny Bad, Misandry Good". We must follow different weirdos ;)

I'm all over that!

*buys popcorn*
I'm guessing you're the same Tielan who writes awesome Maria Hill fic? I love your fics! I've gone on a reading marathon these past few days. You converted me to Steve/Maria!
The Tielan who writes a shitload of Maria-centric and Maria/Steve fic would be me. :)

Glad to hear you've been enjoying them - and converting new believers is always nice. O:-)
