James Spring was turning 40 and wanted to give himself a birthday present, so he flew to Baja California, Mexico, and tracked down a 6-year-old Soquel girl who had been abducted in January by her fugitive parents.
Viana Carelli, 6, and her grandparents, Gene and Ellen Pauly of Soquel, had a tearful reunion Tuesday night at Mineta San Jose International Airport. Her parents were in police custody, wanted in connection with a San Francisco killing.
Spring, who had read about the abduction and wanted to do something monumental to mark his 40th birthday, found the family in Baja California after a two-day search. An infant baby, Faith, who has Down syndrome, also returned with her sister.
