tv // x-files // mulder wtf

Hollywood's also full of liberals. Just sayin'.

I went to Tumblr today for the first time in months. It took about five minutes before I came across a repost of the obligatory OMG HOLLYWOOD IS SO FULL OF RACISTS AND SEXISTS screed. Then another minute before someone was complaining about Khan being played by a white guy in ST:ID.

Yeah. That'll hold me over for a few more months at least. Ugh.

Confession: I am a liberal. Always have been. Downright socialist, in some respects. BUT. That weapons grade political correctness on Tumblr? Even my teenage daughter complains about it. (Intriguingly, it seems to go hand in hand with a willingness to speculate upon and then condemn -- based upon said speculation, like torching a home-made straw man -- the life choices of almost any actor out there, in gross violation of any right to privacy and dignity known to man.)

I had the Cumberbatch-as-Khan discussion a while ago (not on Tumblr) and my main point there was that Ricardo Montalban isn't exactly a "Singh Khan" either, ethnically speaking, so what's the big deal? There are few actors today that can play "unhinged intellectual ice menace" as well as Cumberbatch, and that is really what should matter most to people plunking down $15 for a movie.

LOL. I love that.

Ricardo Montalban isn't exactly a "Singh Khan" either, ethnically speaking, so what's the big deal?

Because Ricardo Montalban was a PERSON OF COLOR OMG. Didn't you know that Khan was an ICONIC LATINO ROLE AND--- lol I can't even say that with a straight face while in capslock.

There are few actors today that can play "unhinged intellectual ice menace" as well as Cumberbatch, and that is really what should matter most to people plunking down $15 for a movie.

Yep. If I have a job done - anything from someone making me a sandwich to doing work on my car to performing surgery - I want the person who's going to do the best job. I don't care what the hell they look like. When I go see a movie, the same rule applies. But I don't know, maybe it's because Hollywood is so much about image, color and sex and orientation and all that seems to take center stage, so to speak, when you talk about casting. Not whether the given person actually did well in the role. And that's not to say that there aren't talented actors who could have played Khan and aren't white... but I really doubt that the reason Abrams didn't cast them is because he's some kind of secret white supremacist.

^THIS. A thousand times this.

As for the weapons grade political correctness on Tumblr, I guess that's we get for letting teenagers with no responsibilities and no idea of how the world works run loose on the Web! (Not your daughter, though, alphaflyer -- she sounds very sensible.)
If tumblr isn't complaining about something it diiiiiies!!!!
Aha, that must be it!

Has anyone figured out why, though? I mean, different social media type places have different 'feels'... Twitter is more conservative than LJ, for example... but I swear I can't be on tumblr for five minutes before ending up knee-deep in some social justice crap.
That's what my kidlet complains of -- all that "social justice crap", mostly spouted by enthusiastic teenagers without a clue about real life, real social issues, or justice (I'm not even mentioning law...).

I have advised her to (a) ignore it and (b) take it for what it's worth, namely as the ignorant ramblings of people who hide behind the anonymity of the internet to avoid intellectual honesty, evidence, civility and accountability in equal measure.

Twitter is like I'm too busy for crap, LJ is too creative for ALL this crap, and Tumblr is like, you'll be here all day... give me your crap!!!!!
The problem with Hollywood is not that it is liberal or conservative. The problem with Hollywood is that for the most part, whether liberal or conservative, just about everyone who's a part of it be incredibly self-righteousness about their particular political/social/economic beliefs ... and then completely betray those beliefs to make a buck.

Just sayin'.
Hollywood's liberal as hell. Just ask almost any star who's 'come out' as conservative. Just look at who prominent actors, directors, and producers donate to come election time. Go check out Jason Mattera's Hollywood Hypocrits.

Well yes, how else would you explain 'global warming is destroying the planet but I need to fly in my private jet' or 'gun violence is terrible but lets make bloody shoot-em-up blockbusters glorifying it.'
